BMW F800R Test
|
The frame is not the GS tubular one but a box one that you can find on the F800S, to it a nice large swing arm is connected with a nicely designed wheel (close to the K series). While you have a look at the bike you will notice that BMW is now using standard switches! Well as soon as you use them you notice that BMW is definitely not used to put those on its bike as those switches are way too small and, well you don't know if you are using them or not. A bit annoying. And while we are in the "complaints"section: why isn't there a centre stand? There is a chain drive! You have to grease that thing on a regular basis…..Optional ok! Helps to keep the price close to the Japanese bikes one.
But back to business lets start the bike! For those who know the 800GS there is no real difference, the sound is great, the engines purrs like a big cat, which gets angry as soon as you twist the gas handle! Great! On the saddle, a very comfy one by the way! The bike feels small, light, ready to have fun.
Steering is bit heavy at low speed, guess this is due to the steering damper, but gets very light and easy as soon as the bike rides at a normal speed. This bike is just a bad boy tool! You can't resist to the gods of acceleration, bending and breaking! The engine pushes nicely and has you play with it all the time. As soon as the first curve shows here comes the fun, this is what this bike is made for : twisties! It really handles easily and jumps from one curve to the next one, you don't have the choice! You need more, and more and more!
This new BMW F800R is really a great bike for the week-end ride, but it's not the one we would use for long rides on motorcycle tours. If you like to have a huge smile under the helmet this bike will give it to you! |

The
Lubéron
Located between the Alps and the Mediterranean sea the Lubéron mountain offers magnificent sceneries made of lavender fields, small villages on top of cliffs and forests. The regional Lubéron park is labelled "UNESCO biosphere reserve". The Lubéron is made of a lower part called the "Petit Lubéron", on the west side of the "Combe de Lourmarin", not higher than 700m. The highest part is on the est side and called the "Grand Lubéron", going as high as 1125m at the point called the "Mourre Nègre".
Even though the Lubéron has been inhabited since prehistoric times the first villages on top of cliffs appeared only around the Middle Age. People were coming down from the villages to work in the fields. When needed they moved in stone shelters called the "Bories", there are at least 3.000 of those in the Lubéron. Next time you are on a motorcycle tour or on your own, take your time to enjoy this very special part of France. |
Irish Beers The travel journalist Paul Theroux once wrote: "I cannot remember any people so quickly hospitable or easier to meet." And he was right! Irish people are really nice and like to stop for a pint and enjoy some craic (the irish way of fun). A pint is the standard word you will have to learn to survive in Ireland (a woman will mainly say a "half-pint"). But what comes in the pint? Well without a doubt the most well known irish beer is the Guinness. It is black, dry and raosty and requires time before you can drink it: always wait till the glass is black and the creamy head well formed top before you start drinking. But Guinness isn't the only lager you can also find Murphy's and Beamish. The first is brewed in Dublin while the other two come from Cork. Time to join us on the Irish Tour to experience those beers and the others.

A couple of things made me wonder what is wrong with today's world. I am not talking about the world economical crisis but about safety when riding a motorcycle, any size. Living here in province and close to the French Riviera I can see everyday, as soon as the spring sun is back and especially during the summer time, all those cute girls riding bikes and scooters while wearing what no one can call the optimal safety gear. Of course the sun is warm, the road reflects the heat yadah yadah yadah…
But when you think about it, no there is no need to listen to the gruesome comments of some doctors, is it really serious to ride anything with two wheels and an engine without at least a jean and a jacket, and that's not even safe. Seeing those girls, women on scooters and bikes only wearing flip-flops, a skirt and a tiny top gives me goose bumps. It is well known that a fight between skin and road is always lost by the skin. Do those people think about the fact that their life could be ruined? Looking like a pizza is definitely not the optimal way to look good.
And I am not sure that some advertising campaigns got the concept right, check that girl on the photo. Well the top part is great: leather jacket and helmet…but those long legs with just stockings on and the high heel shoes as far from what one should wear on a sports bike, in fact, on any bike.
Girls lets get our leathers on and stay safe! People will love us more in one piece with a nice soft skin once we take the gear of than with a grainy skin texture and bandages.

Take your time.
No special trick in this issue but a suggestion! When you are on a tour with Unicorn Adventures Ltd or on your own just take your time! Enjoy the ride, the people and the friends. What we like to do is to find a sweet spot to enjoy a good rest while the bikes cool down. On our tours we are lucky as we cross many little villages where there is always a square in the shade with a nice "café" to enjoy a little drink and a break.
Just sit down, talk with the other bikers, with the local people, share your feelings about the ride, about the time passing by, no need to rush back on the bikes, just enjoy life at that precise moment!
Of
course you can do the same when you are on your own. Like find yourself
a sweet spot, with some nice grass or a comfy tree trunk, put the
bike on the stand, remove the jacket, sit down and listen to the wind
in the trees, to the "click" sounds of the engine cooling down. Don't
take a look at your watch - even better do it the Peter Fonda way
in "Easy Rider" : throw it away - let the time pass, let your thoughts
run free….Take your time !
