BMW Motorrad France Partner

As of December 2007, Unicorn Adventures Ltd became officially partner of BMW Motorrad France for Premium Tours organisation. This will give all French BMW dealerships access to our tours to get their customers on the road and enjoy their bikes. Dealers will no more be overworked trying to organise tours as this will be managed by Unicorn Adventures Ltd.

New Tours

New tours have been created. The Napoleon Road Tour, a 4 days tour, has been replaced by a 10 days tour which is a real time travel! Riding a 21st century bike, the tour members will travel through time while they ride by and visit magnificent French castles built from the XIth to the XVIIth century. The biggest leap through time will take 15.000 years when tour visits the Lascaux Cave. This unique tour has been called the French Castles Tour! Make sure you read the full description on our website.

The Unicorn Adventures Ltd Tour catalogue also grows towards the South East and Northern Africa! The New Tours, already present on our web site, will take you to:

Bike test

BMW F800GS

BMW F800GS test by Unicorn Adventures Ltd

BMW F800GS (c) Unicorn Adventures Ltd

Your mom should have told you : never trust the press ! The pictures of the F800GS one can see in the motorcycle magazines don't show the real size of the beast. This bike is a serious one and that ugly (in the magazines) grey colour is in fact very nice and gives a "bad boy" style to the bike, while the yellow/black one is more funny!

No surprise with the switches: standard BMW! Quality, a switch for each direction light and new generation dashboard (found on nearly all new BMW models). The handlebar is superb! And those hand protections are serious stuff! Not just a piece of plastic to protect your hands from the wind ! Real Steel.

Lets start the engine: wow! Lovely low noise! The exhaust pipe size gave the impression the sound would be non existent! No way! At each read light or in the smallest tunnel you have to twist the gas handle just for the pleasure to hear the sound! Engine is running, lets get on the bike. For a tall guy (1m85) getting on the bike is easy and the feet rest on the ground. A "vertically challenged' person may feel a bit at risk that high with just the toes touching the ground.

First gear in, very softly (the BMW gearboxes get better over time), and ….ooooopppsss….that engine is pulling the bike fast and hard! This vertical twin engine likes to play! Feels even better than the same engine tested last year on the F800S! It is quite hard to stay at legal speeds with this beast! Low revs are ok up to the 5th gear (in 6th gear you will need some more revs).

The engine has a very active rev zone around 4000/4500 rpm, just where you will ride it most of the time! It pulls and goes and goes and goes! The chassis is very efficient and supports the engine active life with brio.

The 21 in front wheel offers a very easy and efficient handling giving this bike all what is necessary to have loads of fun on twisty roads.

The F800GS windshield is doing a good job up to the 130 km/h speed limit you can find on most European highways. At that speed the engine purrs softly around the 4500 rpm ensuring a low gas consumption (considering the never ending price climb this is a very good point!) and a nice range (as much as the little one cylinder F650GS ?).

Luggage wise you can use your R1200GS one! Easy! Making sure the passenger has a sort of back rest. Having already what seems to be a nice position (foot rests are low enough) and some nice big handles she will be happy to travel with you on that bike!

During our test we drove by a 2008 R1200GS and wondered if the F800GS won't cannibalise a part of the 1200 market. If you are not in love with the flat twin, the F800GS is an alternative solution to consider seriously! And she is more than 3.000 euros cheaper! This F800GS is a great bike! Will there be an " Adventures " version ? That would be cool !

Cultural drops

Opatija

In the Kvarner Gulf stands the lovely town of Opatija. The best way to get there is to take the road around Istria and arrive by the south, along the Gulf while enjoying the view on the islands. For those who have already been to France and enjoyed the "Côte d'Azur" arriving in Opatija gives a funny "déjà vu" feeling. Cypress and Pine trees mixed with Palm trees, manors and villas from the 19th century with superb gardens running down to the sea give Opatija this "Nice of the Adriatic" style.

Tourism really took off in Opatija around 1843 when Higino von Scrapa had the Villa Angiolina and its park built. A powerful businessman he liked to welcome the high society at his villa. Some forty years later Opatija became a summer resort where the Austria-Hungarian elite met: king Charles of Romania, king Oscar of Sweden, princess Louise of Saxe-Bourg, and people like Puccini, Mahler, Tchekov etc… enjoyed spending tipme there. When you ride by Opatija, with the Croatia Unicorn Adventures Ltd Tour, why not go for a walk on the François-Joseph promenade? Or visit the villa Angiolina?

The Canal du Midi

The project of a life! But some figures to better grasp the extend of the Canal du Midi:
  • The Canal has a total length of 240km from Toulouse to the Thau Pond, not counting the extension legs to the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Width is 20 to 24m (on the surface).
  • Depth is 2,25 to 2,50m.
  • 7.000.000 cubic meters of earth have been removed during the digging.

  • 20 years of work, 12 of them just for the digging and building.
  • Up to 12.000 women and men have worked on it.
  • 63 locks (among them the famous 9 consecutive ones in Fonserannes/Béziers).
  • Belongs the UNESCO world heritage since 1996

Pierre-Paul Riquet was still a child when he saw, for the first time, the presentation of a project to connect with a canal the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. During the following 40 years he never lost track of the idea and finally, once he was rich et 58, he could start working on it. Of course he wasn't the only one motivated by the idea but he managed to find a solution to bring water to the canal. In 1666 Colbert, finance minister for Louis XIV, gives the green light for the first test digging but only if Riquet puts his money on the table and proves the feasibility of his idea to use the water from the "Montagne Noire" (black mountain, which is ridden through during the "Mediterranean Coast Tour").

Once convinced the hard work can start. Unfortunately Riquet won't see the project go to its end as he died in October 1680, a couple of month before the end of the work.

The Canal du Midi was inaugurated on May 24, 1681, by Daguesseau, the kings intendant. The royal barque sailed through the Fonserannes 9 locks that same day. If you want to enjoy the beauty of the Canal du Midi and see those famous 9 locks, join the Mediterranean Coast Tour.

Ladies News

Chrome

Chrome is a girl's best friend

A true "XX" creature always gets attracted by all reflecting surfaces, right? Mirror in elevators, store windows, car mirrors... the Narcissus phenomenon is amazingly alive! Well, girls, you have to know that, from now on, your motorcycle can be your best friend telling you that you are the most beautiful maiden in the land, thanks to a new painting process.

Do you know that it is possible nowadays to chromium-plate every surfaces? Can you imagine that? Your tank entirely chromium-plated… an ideal mirror for frequent glances, and totally incognito! And why not chromium-plating other elements such as mud-guard, or even your helmet. Even your jacket or your boots!

Furthermore, you can think about customizing all this by choosing any colour, with specific effects such as mother-of-pearl, brass, tin, aluminium, etc… fashionistas will appreciate, for sure!!!

Two drawbacks to highlight: like every painting, you have to prevent it from big shocks. Then treat your bike as if it was your boyfriend : a velvet glove on an iron hand! And be careful not to clean too hard the painted area. I'll forward the message to my beloved man! ;-) And what to do in case of little deep scratches? Just apply colorless varnish (because you're worth it) and shine it. Too easy…!

Girls, I'm quite convinced that this new process is the invention of the century!!!

The Techie Tricks and Tips

Unicorn Adventures Ltd tips and tricks

Drink and Ride.

When you go for a long ride in some sunny place (like the new Unicorn Adventures Ltd Africa tours) you can get quite thirsty ! Of course the usual solution is to carry a bottle of water in the top case or in a bag. If you ride in a group you will have to wait for a stop to get off the bike and get a sip! And most of the time remove the helmet (full face helmets only).

Did you try the water back pack, used in many out-doors sports? Those are soft bags that you fill in with water, get them on your back (some are made to get under a jacket), get the tube over your shoulder. While riding it is easy to grab the mouth piece and get some water! You can also store it in your tank bag, as the reservoir is in soft material it will adjust to the tank bag shape!
