Unicorn Adventures tour tips

Fleet changes

Some changes in our fleet ! You may have noticed on the new site that the BMW K1200LT is no more available for bikers but only for the Chauffeur service.

Considering that most customers prefer, in this category, the lighter BMW R1200RT we have decided to keep the K1200LT and its top-comfort for non-bikers willing to join our tours. A nice way to share the biker vacation experience !

BMW K1200LT with Unicorn Adventures Ltd

Guarantee cheque

Non European customers riding a Unicorn Adventures Ltd bike are always surprised when, prior to tour start, we ask for a guarantee cheque of some thousand euros. Why is that? Why does the amount of the cheque vary with the bike type? Do you get that cheque back?

Why? Because in case you crash the bike, you drop it or get it stolen there is a cost for us (no insurance makes a 100% reimbursement, unfortunately) to get it fixed/recovered etc….

Cheque amounts vary depending of the bike type. A GS has less fairing than a RT or LT thus implying less costs to fix it.

Will you get the cheque back? Of course yes! We don't even cash it in….until there is a problem!

The future

  • A shop ! Soon to come your Unicorn Adventures Ltd shop ! You will be able to get the Unicorn Adventures Ltd clothing and new cool accessories. There will also be a selection of books and videos focusing on biking, traveling etc… Don't miss the Shop's launch !
  • A surprise for 2008 ! You like riding ? Your life is on the saddle ? You don't know a better place than the world to be ? The best way to move on in life is for you on two wheels with an engine ? Then expect a breath taking endurance ride for 2008 !

Bike test

The good vibes: Harley Davidson Bikes

Harley Davidson test by Unicorn Adventures Ltd

FLHRC (c) Unicorn Adventures Ltd

As some of our North American customers do ride with pride what is world wide known as THE bikers bike we had to test at least one Harley Davidson one day! Lucky us! We could test two of them: the FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic and the FLHRC Road King Classic, both 2007 models with the Twin Cam 96 (B for the Heritage) engine.

Feelings: shiny chrome everywhere, the sun reflecting itself in the huge front light, a large leather saddle, a noise allowing to count each piston move…and the whole beast shaking and vibrating on its side stand. Wow! One has to admit that getting close to a HD to ride it for the first time is a special event in a bike's life. The position of the Heritage feels more fluffy than the one on the Road King, as you are a bit higher and the handle bar is straighter on the second one. Feet are on the large feet rests, first gear in! And here we go! For such heavy pieces of metal they feel surprisingly light, thanks to the low center of gravity. Time for some throttle opening and the very first huge smile thanks to the noise of that HD engine! No idea how those pipes passed the European noise test but well, who cares? That is a noise you like! And enjoy playing with!

Vibrations: when you talk HD and Twin Cam you have to talk about vibrations. Some call them "good vibrations" and some…lose their teeth and bolts. On the Heritage, thanks to a softer engine mount, you will feel less vibrations, but the Road King is there to help you lose what was left to shake away!

Fun: riding a HD is definitely fun! The massive torque gets you and all that US iron flying above the asphalt in a twist of the wrist, but you will mainly stick to the speed limit thanks to the wind in your face and the good vibes. For someone used to the German handling efficiency or the Japanese slim bikes taking the first sharp curve with a HD is a …special moment.

What is that sound? As if the foot was on the road! Well in fact your foot IS on the ground only protected from the rude contact by the thickness of the foot rest. Now it becomes all clear why they are that thick! After the first surprise you can't stop playing with the torque and the foot rest scratching! Unfortunately only the people behind you enjoy the sparkles!

Dating: for the first time in the Unicorn Adventures Ltd newsletter we have to talk about the "Dating effect" of a bike (well in fact of two bikes). The style of a HD as well as the exhaust noise are a package that you have to account for! You cannot just jump in your "Honda" (or any other brand) leathers or your latest BMW world touring gear when you want to look like a HD biker! Well you could but then talking about dating doesn't make anymore sense. No! a HD deserves the proper style and look from its biker. Enhancing the beauty of the bike is a must and will point all the lights, fingers and glances at you! With a HD, especially with the Heritage or the Road King Classics with their leather side bags, huge fairing and chromes, people can see you are a serious rider, they see the Route 66 (what is left of it) and see you are a real tough one! Even though you will never make more than 100 km before your rear and back and hands and arms and legs hurt like hell. You will just look like "the right stuff".

This test allowed us to understand a bit of what is behind riding a HD and why you get hooked to the brand! Why there is such a passion about those bikes. And why we offer BMW bikes to our customer on Unicorn Adventures Ltd tours!

Cultural drops

Holy week in Corsica

During the Holy Week, at Easter time, religious ceremonies take place through whole Corsica. The most remarkable are Thursdays and Holy Fridays processions, when numerous cities and villages commemorate the Easter events.

The religious brotherhoods of Corsica are very old. Born in the Franciscan sphere during the Middle Ages, they are the heirs of the "battuti": penitents who went in procession from a village to the other, while whipping themselves mutually.

In Bonifacio, brotherhood members walk in processions through the city, on different roads, and meet in the parochial church to be blessed. Each brotherhood carries statues of saints on shrines made of wood illuminated by torches and lanterns. In Calvi, brotherhood members walk in procession within the citadel with a hood and barefoot. On regular stops they play the "Granitola", a movement which is a spiral that rolls up and unrolls. In Corte, on the evening of Holy Thursday, the procession of the "King Christ " proceeds through the old city streets illuminated by candles. In Erbalunga, on Holy Friday morning, the "Cerca" procession takes place on more than 12 kilometres, from church to church. In the evening, hooded penitents also act "the Granitola."

But it is in Sartène that thebest known procession takes place: the Catenacciu. The identity of this penitent is only known by the parish vicar. After three days shut in a monkish cell to meditate, to read the Bible and to pray, he gets ready for the procession. He wears a red hood, hoists on his back a cross made of massive oak (34,5kg) and attachs a chain of 17 kg to his right ankle. During two hours (which means almost two kilometres), he embodies the Christ and acts his martyrdom.

Either knelt or lying before the high altar, penitents must wait that all pilgrims have kissed the lying Christ one by one. Once the ceremony over, the Catenacciu is brought back to his cell. The Catenacciu procession crossed ages. Created in 1710 in Sartène, the "compagnia del Santissimo Sacramento" brotherhood, extincted in 1920, has been revived in 1990.

The mimosa road

130 Km through Provence's perfumes, the Mimosa road will take you from Bormes-les-Mimosas to Grasse. Eight major stages will let you discover this part of Provence which gets covered in yellow during the first month of the year. In Bormes you will walk through the old village, one of the most beautiful flower covered villages in France, and enjoy close to 90 different types of mimosa.

Km 15: the Mediterranean gardens of Rayol-Canadel will take you to Sainte-Maxime, Km 42.

Saint-Raphaë,l Km 59, from where all 2007 Unicorn Adventures Ltd tours start, will let you walk along the sea side. Last town on the coast, Mandelieu-la-Napoule, is the pivot point of the mimosa road. Make sure you don't miss the biggest mimosa forest in Europe. Time to leave the coast and drive through the mimosa forest along the road towards Tanneron, Km 112, where you will learn more about the work related to the mimosa flowers.

Right before the end of the road a stop in Pégomas, Km 117, will be refreshing. Km 130: the end of the mimosa road in Grasse! Smell and enjoy the town of the perfumes!

Ladies News

Tupperware is over! Time for women Garage Parties!

Up until recent times most "women only" parties consisted of Tupperware stuffs, lingerie, or sex toys. The new trend seems to be the Garage Parties!

Created by a well known motorcycle brand for its dealers, the Garage Party concept is designed to target new female riders and owners. The objective is a kind of demystification of motorcycle riding. Each female participant (men are absolutely not allowed) can ask any question and is encouraged to try out, sit on and get a feel for the different models. A way to learn about the HD (oops here is the brand!) motorcycles and to meet other women with shared interests. There are also mini-sessions on relevant topics such as customising your motorcycle, basic maintenance, etc.

In this way, the workshops introduce women to the riding opportunity and know-how in order to move forward or upgrade from passenger to rider…and selling them a bike.

A great marketing lesson. Well done HD!

The Techie Tricks and Tips

Depending of your country you may experience often or not downhill hairpin curves. Many of our Unicorn Adventures Ltd customers join our tours for the amazing sceneries and for the sexy twisty roads, because they may not have that many at home. But the moment they hit the first downhill hairpin curve they face a little problem: how to manage that thing properly?

The following advice is based on a technique we like, this means you may have to adapt it to yourself or even not use it (of course the following advice is a personal one and as such neither the author nor Unicorn Adventures Ltd could be held responsible), but we like it.

There are two interesting facts with the downhill hairpin curve: you are higher when you enter it than when you exit from it: means a better view of the trajectory; and your speed is a very peaceful one (we talk about normal bikers here). So what is the problem then? Keeping the bike light and easy to handle! Thus managing properly the engine revs and gear. Either you try to get down in first gear and have a very nervous engine and hard to handle bike, or you try the second gear and may have to go faster than necessary to keep the revs in a good range. Why make it so complex when all you have to do is…clutch!

Lets summarize it: curve entry = front breaking to transfer weight to the front tire and get best grip, clutch, get it in second gear (don't release the clutch), let the bike roll in the curve (you will see how light and smooth it feels), control speed with rear brake, rev up and release the clutch in the corner, get some power in and start again at the next curve!

Key word: light handling!
